Hotel Stara Garbarnia Overview
When I first stepped off the tram from Wrocław’s city center, the place that caught my eye was the almost unassuming Hotel Stara Garbarnia. It’s tucked onto Wielkopolska 72, right near the old industrial lanes of Fabryczna, a street that locals still call the “old factory row” because of the old brick warehouses that now house art studios and cafés. Honestly, the first thing that struck me was the building’s worn façade – a mix of 19th‑century brickwork and a splash of modern glass that makes it feel like a time capsule with a Wi‑Fi upgrade.
The check‑in was quick, no long lines, but the front desk staff were a bit shy at first. I asked about parking, and they whispered that the underground garage on the corner of Wielkopolska and Ławrynowa is free for guests, which is a big win because most hotels in this part of the city charge extra for a spot. The lobby itself is a cozy, slightly cluttered space, with a small espresso machine that actually shows off the barista’s skill – you’ll see a few locals grabbing a quick cup before heading to the local market. The staff, once you get to know them, are friendly but not overly chatty; they’re more like helpful guides than tour guides. I mean, they’ll point you to the best pierogi spot on Rybna Street, but they won’t bother you with a whole speech about the city’s mayor.
Room-wise, it’s a solid 3‑star experience with a bit of Polish charm. The beds are surprisingly comfortable for the price, and the linen is crisp. The window faces the back alley, so you get that city hum – the clatter of delivery trucks, the distant chatter of Polish men playing cards in the courtyard of the old factory. It’s not a quiet place, but it’s not noisy either; a soft urban soundtrack at night, which is actually pretty soothing. The bathroom is a bit small – not a luxury bath, but the shower is efficient, and the toiletries are decent. I did notice that the air conditioning sometimes lags behind during the hot July afternoons, so I had to open the window, which let in the scent of nearby street food vendors. The coffee maker is a bit of a hack – you have to add water manually, but it works, and you get that robust local brew.
The only real critique? The Wi‑Fi connection can be spotty, especially on the first floor where the old building’s wiring is a bit of a relic. But honestly, for most travelers, that’s a minor inconvenience compared to the overall vibe. You see, the hotel’s real charm comes from its location. It’s a stone’s throw from the bustling market on Rybna Street, where you can grab a cheap yet delicious pierogi, and just a short walk down to the Wrocław Zoo, which is a great family activity. If you’re into art, the street art on the side of the old factory building is worth a look – a mural of a giant owl that locals say brings good luck. And with the city’s tram network right outside the lobby, you can hop on and explore the rest of Wrocław in under ten minutes. So, if you’re looking for a place that feels like the city’s heartbeat, not just a stopover, this one’s a solid, honest pick.

We took this hotel to be close from the airport. Middle of nowhere so it was really a nice surprise to find this quality of rooms, spaces, parking available, fantastic breakfast, nice and friendly staff. 5-8 minutes walk from little main street where you can buy food, bakeries. Little farther you will find other bigger stores..

The most we liked pictures on the walls all over the hotel. Room was clean. Breakfast was ok. Next to the hotel there is a very nice Italian pizzeria-restaurant.
